Founded in 2013, The Solutions Project resources and amplifies climate justice solutions created by frontline communities building power for an equitable and regenerative economy. Communities of color are most impacted by environmental injustice and the climate crisis and least resourced despite creating some of the most effective solutions that work on the ground. Our theory of change is simple but radical: when frontline climate solutions are properly resourced and amplified, enduring climate and community impact will follow at scale. Our work aims to address the fact that less than 2% of U.S. climate philanthropy reaches grassroots organizations in communities of color, where funding could make the greatest difference. The Solutions Project invests in grassroots climate justice groups, with a focus on those led by women of color, to fuel the US climate crisis response and build a more resilient, just, and equitable world.
Our approach is rooted in a commitment to Solidarity Philanthropy—a trust-based, transformative approach crafted by grassroots organizers and racial justice leaders. Our longstanding relationships with our partners, coupled with our extensive connectivity within the climate justice movement, enable us to quickly direct resources where they are needed most. By reducing many of the barriers that often hinder philanthropic and public funding from reaching frontline communities, we ensure that high-impact, community-driven work can scale and that frontline groups can lead the way in creating lasting, systemic change.
Since our inception, The Solutions Project has deployed over $50 million to more than 350 grassroots groups through its direct grantmaking and movement-led Ecosystem Funds. These investments have empowered frontline communities to scale transformative solutions that build climate resilience, advance equity, and create new economic opportunities. Independent evaluations show that in the past three years, our grantees have secured climate policy wins benefiting 106 million people, and delivered direct climate solutions and services to 1 million people.
